Loved-up couple restart Matlock Bath cable cars for new season

A couple who got engaged at the Heights of Abraham were asked back to officially reopen the Derbyshire attraction for this year’s season.

Beth-rai Rowlands proposed to her girlfriend, Kate Thompson at the told of Masson Hill last May during Covid restrictions.

Kate said yes and the 26-year-olds, who are from Rugby in Warwickshire, were invited back to Matlock to push the big green button and restart the cable cars for the first time in 2022.

The couple got the go-ahead from cable car engineers before taking a ride to the top and enjoying a lunch with a view at the Vista Restaurant followed by a tour through the illuminated caverns.

Beth-rai said: “We chose the Heights of Abraham to get engaged because we’re both outdoorsy people and the Heights has a mixture of everything; beautiful views, places to eat, and something fun.

“It was lovely to be invited back, and we really enjoyed our return visit. We’ll be back again soon.”

The two love birds have set a wedding date for May 2023.

The Heights of Abraham is now open every day during February Half term, and then for long weekends (Fridays – Mondays) until the end of March. From March 26, the estate is open daily until November 6, 2022.

Despite this, the attraction announced that it will be closed due to an amber weather warning put in place by the Met Office this Friday (18 February) because of Storm Eunice.

The Heights of Abraham plans to open as normal on Saturday, February 19.

The attraction sees passengers lifted 1/3 of a mile up Masson Hill in one of twelve cable cars to a height of more than 500ft. On the way, the cars pass by five towers, the highest being 77ft tall.
