New BMW iX1 electric car discovered: price, technical data and release date

The fully electric BMW iX1 electric car has already been tested before it is officially presented in 2022. Read on for more information on this highly anticipated new SUV.

  • New small electric SUV discovered
  • Based on the next generation X1
  • Might use components from the iX3
  • A range of almost 300 miles is possible
  • Expected to be unveiled in 2022
  • For sale in late 2022 / early 2023

The BMW X1 SUV is set to be replaced next year, and an all-electric variant – which will almost certainly be referred to as the iX1 – has been tested.

This is BMW’s first all-electric small SUV after the larger iX3 launched in 2020 and one of 13 new electric cars from the German brand before 2025. Read on to find out everything you know about this new EV have to.

New BMW iX1 design

The exterior of the iX1 looks remarkably similar to the spy footage of the similarly camouflaged X1. This means that it has a traditional SUV shape with a slightly sportier design than before.

In contrast to the standard X1, the iX1 has a hidden kidney grille, just like the iX3 SUV and the recently introduced i4 sedan.

Apart from the fact that no tailpipe protrudes from under the rear bumper, the rear of the upcoming electric SUV also follows the design of the new X1 very closely. There’s a far more distinctive rear bumper than the current model, and the steeply chopped rear roofline mimics that of the slightly sportier BMW X2.

New performance and range of the BMW iX1

The BMW iX1 should use similar electrical components as the larger iX3. This model has 286 horsepower and can range up to 285 miles from its 80 kWh battery.

Charging the iX3 ranges from a super-fast 150 kW option (up to 60 miles in 10 minutes) to a home wall box that takes around 12 hours to fully charge a dead battery.

The iX1 could offer even more range than the iX3 because it is smaller and lighter than this car. The current X1 feels sportier than most small SUVs. You can rest assured that the new iX1 is also one of the best compact electric crossovers for propulsion.

New BMW iX1 interior

The interior of the new iX1 is inspired by the new 1 Series shown here

The interior of the new BMW iX1 is likely heavily based on the existing 1 Series, so it has plenty of high quality materials and the latest iDrive system with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and the option of a fully digital driver display.

The electric BMW iX3 loses around 40 liters of trunk space compared to the petrol and diesel-powered X3 – you can assume that the new iX1 electric car also has a smaller trunk than the standard X1.

New BMW iX1 price and release date

BMW hasn’t announced how much the new X1 or iX1 will cost, but it is certain that the new electric SUV will be significantly more expensive than the outgoing X1.

This means you can expect to hand over at least a few thousand pounds more than the existing plug-in hybrid X1 model for £ 40,580 to park an iX1 on your drive when it turns in in late 2022 or early 2023 the trade is coming.
