New houses could be built on the wedding venue in Bridgwater

Dozens of new homes could soon be built on the site of a wedding location in Bridgwater near the M5.

Persimmon Homes Severn Valley and Hallam Land Management have joint plans to build 77 homes on the site currently used by the Sydenham Barn wedding venue on the eastern edge of town.

The plans are part of a larger development that will deliver up to 2,000 homes in the country between the Willow Man sculpture and the A39 Bath Road.

The Sedgemoor District Council is expected to decide on the latest plans in the summer.

The two developers received master planning approval from the council in July 2020 to build up to 2,000 apartments between Bath Road and the Bristol and Exeter railway line – along with 1,200 m² of retail space, leisure facilities, a new elementary school and other facilities.

The area covered by this latest application excludes the property near the freeway, which will be developed in a future phase, but includes the wedding venue and a number of surrounding buildings.

Reviews left on the company’s social media profiles have claimed that trading will cease in late May – but this has not been officially confirmed by the company’s owners, and its website remains up and running.

The developer has not confirmed how many of the new homes on the site will be affordable properties.

Access is via Agusta Drive; further access will be made from King’s Drive at a later date.

Shannon Ears, who lives less than a mile from the site on Pearl Close, said the developers need more work protecting local wildlife while new homes are delivered.

She said, “Large numbers of houses and settlements have been built in this area without caring for the environment or local wildlife.

“There are no plans to create nature reserves or help protect them, let alone promote our local wildlife.”

These plans come shortly after the council approved detailed plans for 80 low-cost homes on King’s Road, Bridgwater, with £ 15 million in funding from Vistry Partnership and Homes England.

The council is expected to decide on the plans for Sydenham Barn later this summer.
