Newcomer Philipp Eng takes sensational pole in superfinal B

Romeo Ferraris driver Philipp Eng continued his impressive PURE ETCR debut and took pole position for the Super Final B in Copenhagen.

With a time of 1: 11.203, Eng was a little more than a tenth of a second ahead of Tom Chilton from Hyundai Motorsport, securing the top spot.

The Austrian, competing in his first PURE ETCR round, was the revelation of the weekend after winning the preliminary round battles on Saturday.

Now he starts right at the front in Superfinal B, which will be played today at 3:30 p.m. CET.

“It was a great qualifying, the team led me very well,” said Eng after qualifying.

“This is my first Super Pole and it was a lap on the edge, I had to risk a lot and was close to the wall a few times, I had a lot of adrenaline. I am very satisfied with P1 in my group. “

Close was the third of six cars to set a lap time, and although it seemed like a temporary mix of the gas at Turn 1, in the first sector he was only a tenth slower than Hyundai Motorsport’s early pacesetter Augusto Farfus.

A purple second sector brought Eng into the race and a solid final sector brought Eng to the top of the pile eight tenths of a second ahead of Farfus.

Farfus was the first driver to set a lap, but he complained. “[a] a couple of big mistakes on my lap that cost me a better starting position. “The Brazilian added:” I think we had the car to fight for the top position but that was up to me. “

On either side of Eng’s pole time was the Cupra X Zengo Motorsport of Mikel Azcona and the second of the Romeo Ferraris Alfas of Rodrigo Baptista.

Neither of them made it to the time of Eng and will be fifth and sixth respectively for the superfinal.

The last two cars to set up a time presented Eng with the greatest challenges, with Zengo Motorsport’s Jordi Gené missing just under two tenths of a second on the lead in an excellent final sector.

Hyundai’s Tom Chilton was equally impressive in his Velostar N ECTR when the Brit attacked. Chilton, who had driven the fastest middle sector of the session, clattered over the curbs of the final chicane, trailing pole time by just 0.114 seconds and starting second.
