Relaxation at wedding receptions could come before the lockdown ends

Weddings of up to 100 guests could be allowed starting next week as part of a compromise plan to make up for disappointment over delaying reopening on June 21st.

The prime minister is considering proposals to increase the 30-guest limit as planned in the roadmap for Jan.

The new limit would be determined by the size of the venue to ensure the event remained Covid-safe, the celebrations would be tailored to the laid-back funeral rules, and any indoor wedding would have to use social distancing and face masks.

However, officials fear that a significant easing of measures at the height of the wedding season would turn them into super-spread events, and so the limit could be kept at 30.

Boris Johnson will announce the plans on Monday.

Ministers want weddings and funerals to be exempted from delays on June 21 because it makes political sense

Downing Street was forced to defend the G7 barbecue on Saturday night, during which world leaders and their spouses appeared to disobey the rules of social distancing.

Photos of the Carbis Bay event appeared to show more than 30 people in attendance – which would have broken the rules for wedding parties.

However, No. 10 said there were fewer than 30 guests, the event was held outdoors, and all attendees at the summit were put through a daily program of testing.

“The event last night was carried out completely Covid-safe within the framework of the existing rules,” said the official spokesman for the Prime Minister.

“This was an informal meeting of the G7 leaders and rightly it is being held privately … but you can see that it was a relaxed atmosphere and gave the leaders the opportunity to discuss outside of a formal setting.”
