Samsung SDI considers building battery plant for BMW electric cars in Hungary

YONGIN (dpa-AFX) – Koranic screen and battery maker Samsung SDI wants to build a battery plant for BMW electric cars in Hungary, according to a press report. Samsung CEO Jay Lee had discussed considerations about expanding the existing cooperation with BMW CEO Oliver Zipse in South Korea in December, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported Wednesday, citing unnamed sources. Zipse, in turn, had discussed plans for the plant with Samsung SDI chief Choi Yoon-ho recently in Las Vegas.

The factory could be built near the company’s existing plants in the country, according to the report. Investment is estimated at around one trillion Korean won (about 750 million euros), according to the report. According to a Samsung SDI spokesman, the company is looking at different ways of cooperating with many automakers./stw/men/stk
