Tesla sold more than 56,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles in September – the highest since production began in Shanghai about two years ago, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Tuesday.

Most of these were sold in China – of which Elon Musk’s automaker exported 3,853 vehicles from its Shanghai factory in September, according to CPCA data.

The total of 56,006 cars was up 27% from August, data from the CPCA showed. The U.S. electric vehicle maker, which makes Model 3 sedans and Model Y sport-utility vehicles in Shanghai, sold 44,264 China-made vehicles in August, including 31,379 that were exported.

According to CPCA data, China car sales were 1.6 million in September, down 17% year over year.

Tesla said it delivered a record 241,300 vehicles worldwide between July and September – an increase of 73% over the previous year.

Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory now makes more cars than its Fremont, California factory, Musk said during the company’s annual general meeting Thursday.

Musk said at the meeting that the Shanghai factory is “the best quality, the lowest cost and also the least drama”.

Tesla’s China sales fell 27% in April versus March after the automaker was targeted by the Chinese government and state media.
