The biggest Only Fools and Horses fan has a 3,000 pound tattoo all over the back of the cast and took Del Boy’s car to his wedding

Dean Paine has been Only Fools and Horses’ biggest fan since he was 6 when his grandparents first bought him a video from the iconic comedy series and he was instantly hooked.

Since then, the 33-year-old chef has spent thousands of pounds on memorabilia, collectibles and Only Fools experiences – including £ 3,000 on an entire back tattoo of the cast.

He even drove in Del Boy’s car to his wedding, even though his wife wasn’t really interested in the show, has a house full of props and scripts, and has met all of the cast – but one.

Dean has met all of the main characters except Nicholas Lyndhurst – he says meeting him would “mean the world”

Dean, who lives in Wickford, Essex, told MyLondon, “At one point I had a whole bedroom full” [of memorabilia]but now I have kids that I had to sell a little bit of.

“But I still have all of my full scripts, I have props from the show, I’ve met all of them – except for Nicholas Lyndhurst.”

Dean said he met Del Boy (David Jason) five times, as well as Trigger, Boycie, Marlene and Mickey Pearce, but Rodney – Nicholas Lyndhurst – is the last cast member he really wants to meet to complete the set.

He may not have met Nicholas, but he carries him everywhere, on the huge Only Fools tattoo on his back.

“Each face took about five hours to tattoo”

Dean paid around £ 3,000 for his entire back tattoo, which was designed by local tattoo artist Sam Butler, and the entire design took over 30 hours to complete.

He said, “Each face took about five hours – it was just supposed to be David Jason, but then it went to Rodney, to Grandad, and then it went all over my back.

“I showed David Jason when I met him and he wrote about it in his new book. He talked about meeting fans at the convention and talked about how a boy even got a grandpa tattoo on his whole back let – and until now i’m the only one with grandpa.

“I remember talking to him and he called the cameraman to take pictures of my back. It was a great day.”

Dean's Only Fools and Horses Tattoo caught the cast's attention - and even featured it in David Jason's autobiography

“Each face took about five hours – it was just supposed to be David Jason, but then it went to Rodney, to Grandad, and then it went all over my back.”

“John Challis was amazing – nothing was ever too much for him”

Not only David Jason has met Dean several times: after meeting the late John Challis for the first time at the age of 7, he stayed in touch, emailed him about once a month and kept getting nice replies.

He said, “We have met every year for the past 20 years and of all the Only Fools and Horses cast members, he’s the one who meets the fans, he loves his fans and nothing has ever been too much for him.

“I sent him a picture of my tattoo when I had it on my back and he posted it on his twitter and that went as far as it went.

“It only came out a few weeks ago that he was sick, I emailed him and he said he was fighting on. He has such a lovely woman, so many millions of people behind him.

“That’s what he said to me: ‘I’ll keep fighting’. He was amazing.”

“The scripts are the most important thing, they are unique”

In addition to developing a personal bond with the Only Fools and Horses cast, Dean has an extensive collection of memorabilia, including props like the Del Boy’s Reliant Regal car door, the lion biscuit tin, and Del Boy’s real hat, as well as original scripts posted on eBay for Sell £ 10,000.

“The main thing is the scripts, they are unique – a lot of them were damaged or thrown away during the shoot, so it’s really difficult to get them now,” said Dean.

“But I never started out to make a profit, it’s for me personally.”

“Del Boy’s car was one of the best parts of my wedding”

Personal is definitely the right word: Only Fools and Horses runs through every aspect of Dean’s life.

“My wife isn’t really interested,” he explained, “but my family really supports me – I had Del Boy’s car to take me and my best man to my wedding. It was one of the best parts of the wedding.

“My kids are 3 and 5, I’m trying to get them to do it, but nothing at the moment. A man who owns the Trotter van doesn’t live far from me, so I dressed up my son and took him there to take pictures – I’m trying [get them into Only Fools] but right now they’re just not interested. “

Dean also loves taking part in Only Fools-related tours, including meet-and-greets in Peckham and Margate, where you can see iconic landmarks from the show but the 40th anniversary celebrations due to take place this year have been canceled by the pandemic.

“Apparently they’re going to have a really big gig next year,” he said, hoping the last cast member he has yet to meet shows up.

“If someone could help me meet Nicholas one day, I would travel, I would do pretty much anything just to get a picture. That’s all I want said.

“It would mean the world.”
