Deadly brown snake hitchhiked 110 kilometers in the driver’s car

A Queensland driver carpooled an unwanted passenger this week after accidentally making a 100-mile drive to a deadly eastern brown snake.

Fortunately, a “one in a million” encounter put the driver in touch with David Voss of Gladstone Region Snake Catchers.

Mr Voss said he was driving into a mall on Monday when he received a call from the distraught driver.

When he found the car, the snake catcher saw the large reptile in the front seat.

“It appears the queue has traveled from Rockhampton to Gladstone with the owner of the vehicle and most likely in the cabin of the car.

Mr Voss said the snake was relatively unharmed. It was safely caught in a very delicate rescue operation.

“There was a small amount of scalp damage to the stern so it may have been in the engine compartment originally,” he added.

“I’m not a fan of catching Eastern Browns at night, especially from a car, but everything went well.

“The world’s second deadliest snake travels unnoticed with you in a car for a few hours.”

The poison of the eastern brown snake is considered to be the second deadliest in the world after the inland taipan.

The encounter comes after a New South Wales Snake catchers warned of a bumper season along the east coast as wet weather makes perfect conditions for the snakes’ food source.

Mr. Cade estimated that in the weeks that followed he had removed more than a dozen five-foot long brown snakes from the east. Red bellies are “likely double”.

The snake season usually starts in mid-September and lasts through March.
