Allen Park – Former Detroit Lions cornerback Alex Brown is charged with two cases of drug operation, which caused serious injuries, and two cases of reckless driving, following an early morning car accident that injured two , caused serious injuries, prosecutor Kym Worthy’s office said on Monday.
Brown’s injured co-driver was his teammate Charlie Taumoepeau.
“We are aware of Sunday morning’s situation with Alex Brown,” the Lions said in a statement. “Alex was released from the team on Sunday afternoon and Charlie Taumoepeau is receiving adequate medical care following the injuries sustained in the incident.
“Driving under the influence of alcohol is a matter that we take very seriously,” the statement said. “We, as an organization, focus our thoughts and support on the victim and their families as they recover.”
According to the report, the accident occurred on August 15 at 2:13 a.m. Brown was reportedly drunk and was driving at high speed on the wrong side of the freeway on Interstate 75 heading south near I-375 in Detroit.
Brown is said to have hit another car head-on and injured the 27-year-old’s legs. According to the prosecutor, the driver had to be placed on a backboard by paramedics before he was taken to a local hospital.
Taumoepeau was trapped in the car and had to be freed from the Jaws of Life. According to the prosecutor, he was put on a neck collar and also transported to a local hospital with a neck injury.
The Lions have since released both Brown and Taumoepeau. Brown was released about 10 hours after the accident, while Taumoepeau was released a day later with a non-soccer injury. He will return to the injured reserve with the team after clearing the waivers.
When contacted by phone, a Brown representative declined to comment, while a text message to Taumoepeau’s agent was not returned immediately.
