Man in critical condition after car accident

Michigan State Police say a 25-year-old Alpena man is in critical condition after a single car accident on Wednesday.

Soldiers say they were called to a single car accident on Long Rapids Road between Hook and Cathro Roads in Maple Ridge Township at around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

They say a 1974 Corvette driven by the 25-year-old was traveling northwest on Long Lake Road when he crossed the centerline and pulled off the south side of the road and hit several trees before stopping in a ditch.

According to police, the man was found unconscious and unresponsive in the car. Rescue workers and the fire brigade arrived on site shortly afterwards, took the man out of the car and provided first aid.

The man was taken to a local Alpena hospital and later flown to a Midland hospital for treatment. Soldiers say he has since been admitted to a Royal Oak hospital and is in critical condition.

Soldiers say their preliminary investigation shows no evidence of intoxicants, but it is believed that speed is a factor in the crash and the 25-year-old was unbuckled.
