Police said officers saw a car speeding too fast on Henderson Valley Road at 12:38 p.m. and made a U-turn but did not activate lights and sirens.

Detective Inspector Kevin McNaughton of the Waitematā CIB said the vehicle was traveling at high speed down Henderson Valley Road, some distance from the officers.

Police found the vehicle, whose lights appeared to be off, hit a power pole further along Henderson Valley Road, he said.

The officers tried to provide first aid, but two people died on the scene.

Another person is in critical condition and one person is in stable condition in the hospital.

Henderson Valley Road remains closed due to damaged power lines.

A scene investigation was carried out with the Serious Crash Unit on site and the IPCA was notified.
