A toddler was reportedly shot dead after being hit by a “stray” bullet fired on one side of a road while traveling in a car in the opposite direction.
According to US California Highways Patrol (CHP) officials quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle, the child was driving south in a Toyota Lexus on Interstate 880 in Oakland yesterday (Saturday) afternoon.
The CHP reportedly received a report of the shooting at around 2:10 pm, stating that the victim’s car “was suddenly hit by gunfire”.
The Chronicle said, “A toddler in the Lexus was shot by a bullet and taken to Oakland Children’s Hospital, where the child later died, CHP officials said. The CHP said the child was three years old, but NBC Bay Area reported that the family told the news agency that the boy was 23 months old [a news station] said the boy’s name was Jasper Wu and he was traveling from San Francisco to Fremont when he was met. “
An NBC reporter tweeted that apparently the child’s mother was driving the vehicle and no one else was injured in the car.
Sergeant Raul Gonzalez told the SF Chronicle that investigators believe the shooting occurred in the northbound lanes and that “bullets flew to the south side and a misdirected bullet hit the child,” according to an initial preliminary investigation.
The investigation reportedly temporarily closed all lanes north of Interstate 880 in Oakland on Saturday afternoon. Detectives from the CHP’s Golden Gate Division Special Investigation Unit responded to the crime scene and investigated the shooting, authorities said.
