A remedy for fear of range? Induction charging for electric cars: RAZOR

04/02

By 2040, probably half of the cars on our roads will be electric.

One of the disadvantages of today’s electric vehicles is that they use different charging systems. If you go on a long journey with no compatible charging stations on your route, you may be stranded. This so-called “range fear” is one of the biggest obstacles to the introduction of electric cars. So the point is to manufacture batteries with ever greater ranges.

But soon there could be another solution – wireless charging using a process known as electromagnetic induction.

Induction charging is already standard on toothbrushes and some cell phones. However, WiTricity, a Massachusetts company, has developed a system that allows large amounts of electricity to be safely transmitted over much greater distances. Check out Razor’s animation to see how it works.
