According to BMW, sales of electric cars with full batteries almost tripled in the first half of the year

In the first half of the calendar year, the German luxury car manufacturer BMW reported a nearly tripling of sales of electric cars with full batteries, and total sales of electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, more than doubled among medium-sized companies.

“As expected, our customers are currently buying significantly more electrified vehicles,” said BMW CEO Oliver Zipse.

“In the first half of the year, our sales grew by almost 150 percent. In our home market of Germany, almost every fourth BMW and around 30 percent of the Minis sold have an electric drive.

The number of all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles that BMW delivered in the first half of the year rose by 148.6% to 153,243 units in the first half of the year, while deliveries of all-electric models rose by 183.9% to 36,087 units, compared to 12,712 units delivered increased in the same period in 2020.

“We want to have a total of one million fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road by the end of the year and two million all-electric vehicles by 2025,” said Zipse. “By then we want to deliver ten times the BEV sold in 2020.”

Across the company’s entire product range, electrified vehicles accounted for 11.4% of total deliveries in the first half of 2020 and expects a significantly higher proportion by the end of the year.

“The further electrification of our vehicle fleet is the focus of our short and medium-term planning,” said board member Nicholas Peter.

“The fully electric BMW iX has been rolling off the assembly line at our plant in Dingolfing since July. The fully electric BMW i4 from our main plant in Munich will follow in autumn. “

“All of our decisions are clearly geared towards the key issues of electrification, sustainability and digitization. We use existing resources intelligently for maximum effect. “

BMW successfully launched the BMW iX3 in the first half of the year and expects the all-electric BMW i4 and iX models to follow suit in the coming months when the northern hemisphere moves into autumn.

Further all-electric models will be presented in the near future, according to the company’s press release. In the next two years, BMW expects its electrification efforts to cover almost the entire breadth of the company’s portfolio.

Specifically, BMW expects by 2025 that sales of fully electric vehicles will increase by more than 50% per year and lead to the delivery of around 2 million fully electric vehicles.
