Analysis: Car companies are faced with sales quotas for electric vehicles

Manufacturers could trade with one another, as in the fleet average system, in which Tesla could benefit greatly by selling loans to other companies only with electric vehicles.

The government said allowing the trade will still ensure a certain percentage of the UK’s car fleet are ZEVs, but that number would grow faster than relying solely on carbon targets.

If an automaker fails to achieve its goal and fails to secure loans from another company, it faces fines.

Moran also recognized the need for the government to promote the benefits of moving to zero-emission vehicles in terms of carbon benefits as well as others in order to avoid potential public backlash.

“It is natural to be careful. Change can be scary, ”said Moran. “But traffic is always changing – sometimes for the better and sometimes not so well.

“There are big changes coming up. Decarbonization is not initially free and there is a lot of investment to be made.

“We have to make sure that we spend this wisely and maximize the added value, which is essentially about making the transport of people and goods more efficient.”
