Electric cars have grown in popularity in the last few years and with growing concerns about global warming, electric vehicles appear to be the future of the auto market. While change has been a new phenomenon for most of the world, is there a long story behind this change? Business tycoon Anand Mahindra shared a video on his Twitter timeline of an interview with Roy Doring – an auto electrician who developed some of the early models of electric vehicles. Mahindra posted the clip, praising Doring’s vision and urging people not to be afraid to think ahead of their time.

The business tycoon suggested that naming an electric car after Doring could be a fitting tribute to his legacy and vision. The post shared by Mahindra includes a 1968 interview with Doring in which he drives his Ford Prefect which he converted into an electric car. He talks about the advantages of an electric car and says that the vehicles are more economical compared to a gasoline engine and offer smog-free driving with almost no maintenance.

Doring reveals that his electric car can travel 32 to 48 km on a single charge. Regarding the future of electric cars, he says that electric cars would be in high demand in 50 years. The clip ends with Doring opening the hood of the car to show the 64-year-old electric motor he had used.

The 159 100E Ford Prefect, which was converted as an electric car, is considered Australia’s first electric sedan after World War II and was the last of the 51 vehicles that Doring converted to electric combustion. While electric cars have gained a lot of popularity lately, the idea was revolutionary in 1968. In this interview, too, Doring speaks about the benefits of electric cars in city traffic and emphasizes their cost-effectiveness. He talked about the low maintenance and ease with which these cars can drive in crowded places.

Since it was shared online a few hours ago, the Mahindra post has received over 51,000 views and nearly 3,000 likes on the microblogging site. In response to the video, users praised the vision of Doring and were amazed at the advancement of technology at the time.
