As far as plug-in hybrids are concerned, the Mercedes A 250 e is one of the most sought-after.
As automakers scramble to bring electrified versions of their vehicles to market, it seems that Mercedes has the formula spot on.
As with many offers from Merc, you get a stylish look, a high-quality interior and confidence-inspiring handling.
In addition, the A 250 e offers some remarkable fuel economy values.
The 250 e has a combined fuel consumption of over 250 mpg – making it attractive both as a company car and for private buyers.
Many current hybrids offer an all-electric range of 25 to 35 miles, but the 250 e improves that a lot and is capable of 44 miles on electric alone.
If you run out of charge, a 7.4 kW integrated AC charger allows you to recharge from empty to 100 percent in an hour and a half.
These are the numbers that make those skeptical of electric propulsion think the hybrid route is worth trying.
At the wheel, a car that offers rapid acceleration and pleasant driving dynamics, but is by no means pulsating.
A time of 0-100 mph of 6.6 seconds feels fast enough for most everyday situations, with the 1.3-liter gasoline engine producing 160 horsepower and an additional 102 horsepower from the electric motor.
The accelerator pedal is very sensitive to gas inputs, which means the car is very responsive, although the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission can be a little jerky at times.
The steering is precise and trustworthy, but a bit of “feeling” is missing as feedback.
The vehicle feels good in tight corners, with excellent grip.
With electric drive, the car is quiet and quiet, which continues when you click on the internal combustion engine unless you are using a lot of RPM, then it can get a little noisy.
Visually a stately machine that looks classy from all angles and benefits from AMG bodystyling.
This plug-in hybrid version does not change the aesthetics of the conventional version, the only visual difference is a new charging port.
The headlamp signature is distinctive, while a heavily sculpted bonnet and side panels make for a more purposeful feel.
The smart aluminum rims complete the look.
The interior is packed with high-quality materials and technology, plenty of space in the front and enough space in the back.
Prices for the A 250 e hatchback start at £ 32,980 and there is a choice of four model lines – AMG Line; AMG Line Manager; AMG Line Premium; and AMG Line Premium Plus, the latter tested here.
From AMG Line Premium, the vehicle is equipped with the elegant 10.25-inch digital cockpit, ambient lighting, and illuminated door sills with “Mercedes-Benz” lettering; Modern sound system from Mercedes-Benz; and
Aluminum cladding.
The top model Premium Plus has a panoramic sliding roof that floods the cabin with natural light and gives the interior a pleasant, airy feeling.
You also get memory seats for the driver and front passenger with many adjustment options for a comfortable seating position.
All of this resulted in a cabin that is a very beautiful place and must be among the best on the family sedan market.
In terms of safety, the car is clearly on the standard, as it received the 5-star Euro NCAP crash test result. It has safety functions such as autonomous emergency braking and a lane departure warning system.
In summary, it is an attractive offer in the constantly growing hybrid market. While its looks and luxurious interiors are obvious strengths, it’s the economy numbers that really catch the eye.
