Bride and groom float in a saucepan through flooded streets in India for their wedding

A couple sailed to their wedding in a saucepan after heavy rains flooded the streets in the Indian state of Kerala.

Footage shared on Twitter shows the bride and groom sitting in the aluminum ship while two men and a photographer wade on foot through the underwater street while pushing them.

The newlyweds Akash and Aishwarya borrowed the pot from a local temple as it was “the only option” available at short notice, PTI reported.

Later, the two arrived safe and dry at a small, partially flooded temple in Thalavady, where they exchanged garlands of flowers, a tradition at many Hindu wedding ceremonies.

According to local media reports, the husband and wife are both employed in the health services of a hospital in Chengannur.

The couple wasn’t ready to postpone their big day despite floods and landslides caused by heavy rains that killed at least 27 people across the state.

The Twitter user who shared the footage said, “So this couple from the Alappuzha district of Kerala used a large cookship to wade through the flood waters to get to their wedding venue.

“Even the wedding venue was flooded, but luckily they managed to get married without missing the Muhurtham period.”

Pictures from the area showed cars and buses under water as several houses were washed away in mud and rubble.

Rescuers searched for survivors earlier this week as the Army, Navy and Air Force helped with relief and rescue operations.

Sheeba George, the senior officer in Idukki district, told local media that dozens of families and over 100 relief camps had been evacuated.
