Car goes up in flames after a vehicle was tracked for suspected people smuggling

A car that was driven by a suspected people smuggler in Texas went up in flames after being driven into a civilian car after a vehicle chase, authorities say.

The chase came Monday afternoon after Laredo South Station agents responded to reports of a suspicious gray Dodge sedan headed north on US Highway 83 from the Webb-Zapata county line.

The agents found the vehicle and asked Air and Marine Operations (AMO) and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) for help.

DPS agents tried to stop the Dodge but the driver refused to give in and, according to the CBP, fled the scene. A chase followed and the vehicle collided with a pickup truck in front of Los Del Sur, causing it to tip over on the roof, reported WOAI-TV. No injuries were reported.

The driver of the Dodge and its occupants – who were later classified as illegal immigrants – left the vehicle just before it went up in flames, CBP said.

However, the driver, whose identity is unknown, and the inmates attempted to escape from the scene, were arrested and taken into custody. The Laredo fire department arrived on site and provided medical assistance.

CBP said the occupants of the vehicle were illegal immigrants from Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala.
