Couple was fined £ 70 at Asda for putting gas in their car

A couple received a £ 70 parking fine after getting a gasoline engine at an Asda in Wirral.

The £ 70 claim came after a camera glitch at the Woodchurch supermarket led parking systems to think they had been there for nearly six hours.

They had actually only visited the site twice in one day; once to go shopping at Asda and again later in the day to get gasoline.

But the Parkingeye cameras recorded the vehicle pulling into the Asda store and leaving the pump hours later, leading the system to believe they had exceeded the free parking limit by three hours and 44 minutes.

They had to prove they were real customers with their receipts and bank statements in order to have the fine waived.

To warn others, the couple posted on Crimewatch Wirral, urging people to save their receipts in case the mistake happens to someone else.

They said, “I just wanted to make people aware that we recently received a £ 70 parking fine from ‘ParkingEye’ who are responsible for parking in Asda, Woodchurch.

“The letter accused us of staying in the parking lot for five hours and 44 minutes (which we didn’t).

“We went to the store in the morning and again to refuel in the evening. The cameras had recorded two out of four events and falsely showed us the entire time in the parking lot.

“I went to Asda and was told if I could bring the letter and receipts / statement to the store, they could delete it.

“I didn’t have it with me and appealed the fine online by providing a copy of our banking transactions and just received a notification that it had been canceled.

“Wanted to alert people in case the same thing happens to them.”

A Parkingeye spokesman upheld the fine and said there was an appeal process for anyone with “extenuating circumstances”.

A spokesman said: “The driver’s parking fee notice was overturned on an appeal after proving he was a genuine customer.

“Parkingeye operates an objection procedure that has been checked by the BPA (British Parking Association), with which motorists can object to their parking fee notices.

“If someone has any extenuating circumstances, we would encourage them to highlight it by contacting Parkingeye.”

Asda was asked to comment.
