Fast moving car barely misses workers in construction site

A construction crew working near Maymont, Sask., Could only watch and try to evade when a speeding car drove erratically towards them in a closed lane.

Allan Barilla, the general manager of the local construction company, said it was a scary moment.

“I never expected this guy to show up as quickly as I did and I just decided which way to run,” he said.

“Because if he had driven straight ahead, he would have driven straight into my truck.”

Warman RCMP responded to the call at around 2 p.m. CST on Monday. A red car was driving “at high speed” according to a police press release. The car narrowly missed workers doing some paving work.

Barilla said he originally called RCMP to report another driver in a white truck trying to pass the line of cars on the closed lane. RCMP were already on their way when the driver showed up in the red car.

The car eventually hit another red car, hurled it into the ditch, and then rolled over a black car. Eventually, the 21-year-old driver of the first red car drove into the ditch and overturned. He was transported to the hospital. No one was critically injured, the police said.

“You never know what to expect. When someone is drunk or impaired, or sick, or has a heart attack or stroke. For example, you don’t know, ”said Barilla.

“And we have no protection. I’ve said this before, I tell our crew that the only protection we have is paint and plastic.”

Two members of Barilla’s crew could not hear the radio calls during the incident, and Barilla said they could have been hit if one of the crew members hadn’t forgotten her side tape measure. The driver also encountered a cone just before reaching where he was standing, and the noise drew her attention to the car, Barilla said.

“We trust that people will stay on their side [of the cones]”, he said. “You hope [people] are attentive and do what they’re supposed to do. ”

Barilla said he wants people to be more patient. He said if a construction site is six kilometers long and the speed has been reduced to 60 km / h, the journey will take less than five minutes to slow down and keep people safe.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing. It is not known whether charges have been brought against the driver.
