Devon expects to have installed more than 400 public charging points for electric cars by the end of next year – including 74 fast charging points on the street.

Throughout the week we will cover how Devon is preparing for zero-emission vehicles after 30 nations committed at the COP 26 summit last week to make electric vehicles the “new normal” by making them “accessible, affordable in all regions by 2030 and sustainable ”are made in Glasgow.

The 14 quick chargers – which are 1.6 meters high and can charge 28 vehicles at the same time – are currently being installed across Exeter and by next Christmas there will be 74 across Devon.

Places like supermarkets also provide charging points across the county – regardless of the parishes – and the full Zap map shows all known charging points in Devon.

Councilor Andrea Davis, Devon Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transportation, said, “The government is committed to banning the sale of all new gasoline and diesel cars and vans by 2030, and we and our partners plan for that future.

“By providing these charging points, it gives people the confidence to use electric cars with the knowledge that they can charge their vehicles when needed.

“The charging stations listed here are just the beginning of a comprehensive network of facilities available to the public across Devon.”

Exeter City Council currently has 14 bays in six locations across the city and Plymouth City Council has 42 bays in 14 car parks, accompanied by another 14 bays from Plymouth Community Healthcare and Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Mid Devon District Council has installed eight charging points in its three district leisure centers and in the Tiverton parking garage.

The Torridge County Council offers four active parking bays in its public car parks.

In 2020, Devon County Council, Teignbridge District Council and South Hams District Council installed three state-of-the-art “fast charging stations” in the Chudleigh Library car park, Buckfastleighs Mardle Way car park and Glanvilles Mill car park in Ivybridge. These were financed by Highways England and offer a total of six charging stations.

The Dartmoor National Park Authority has installed two fast charging stations in the Haytor Visitor Center.

Up to 150 public charging points will be installed on the street as part of the Rapid Charging Devon project, funded by Innovate UK.

In addition, there will be 17 charging stations for shared Car Club vehicles. These offer a mix of fast charging – which means that most electric vehicles are 80% charged within 30 minutes – and fast charging.
