Knockloughrim murder investigation opened after woman dies in a burning car

The PSNI has opened a murder investigation after a woman found in a burning car died.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the Knockloughrim area of ​​Co Derry.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, the PSNI said that its Major Investigation Team’s detectives were “opening a murder investigation into the death of a woman from a fire at an address in the Quarry Road area of ​​Knockloughrim this morning, Tuesday October 12th.” to have. .

Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell said, “At around 5:40 this morning, the police received a report of a burning car outside a house on the street. Police and NIFRS were on hand, and a 50-year-old woman in the car was rushed to hospital for treatment.

“Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the hospital staff, she succumbed to her injuries and died in the hospital tonight. A 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was also taken to the hospital for treatment for his burn injuries.

“My investigation is still in the very early stages and I would urge anyone who was on Quarry Road this morning and witnessed anything to contact the detectives on 101 using reference 227 dated 10/12/21.”
