The second and third lanes (of three) were kept immediately after the accident before all lanes on the Essex Road section were closed at 8:20 a.m.
However, the vehicles were moved to the hard shoulder shortly afterwards, with all lanes being released about five minutes later.
The closure created over three miles of queues in the carriageway north of the M11, which connects London to Cambridge via west Essex.
After the collision was cleared up, there were delays in the range of ten minutes.
It is not yet known whether anyone was injured in the collision.
Comments on the incident have been requested from Essex Police, East of England Ambulance and Essex County Fire and Rescue Services.
