After the altercation, police said they all left in what has been described as a small car – which officials believe may have been a Fiat 500.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. yesterday evening near Mote Road and Chancery Lane.
DS Richard Crowhurst said: “An incident has been observed where a woman may have been in distress and been subjected to attack.
“At this point in time, it is unclear whether the reports could be a misunderstanding or whether there were criminal offenses.
“Our officers have performed a number of initial checks, including door-to-door and CCTV inquiries, and we are working to find out who was in that car and where they might be headed.
“We ask everyone involved to contact us so that we can determine the full facts.
“We also ask anyone else who lives nearby or has been in the area to check CCTV systems or dashcams, which may provide important information.”
Anyone with information that could aid the investigation is asked to call 01622 604100 quoting the reference number 23-1410 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or their online form.
