Ford has built a new Mustang Mach-E electric police car concept that could soon find its way into the UK police fleets.
It’s still a prototype for now, but several UK police services (including Police Scotland and the Metropolitan Police Force) have already shown interest in the car.
To transform the roadworthy Mustang Mach-E into a crime-fighting cruiser, Ford enlisted the help of its long-term blue light conversion partner, Safeguard SVP.
The company equipped the electric vehicle with LED flashing lights, sirens, radios and a modern version of the classic battenburg checkered paint scheme that uses more reflective vinyl to improve the visibility of the car to other road users.
There’s even an extra 12-volt battery pack that can power any police-specific accessories so they don’t use up the Mach-E’s main drive battery and reduce the car’s maximum range.
This demonstrator is based on the Mustang Mach-E Standard Range AWD model, which has a 68 kWh battery, a maximum range of 248 miles, and a combined output of 265 horsepower from its two electric motors.
However, Ford also plans to offer its new police car with the same range of powertrains found in its consumer models; There will be an extended range rear-wheel drive variant with a larger 88 kWh battery and a 290 hp motor on the rear axle, which, according to Ford, will deliver a maximum range of 379 miles.
There will also be a performance option that comes with the same powertrain found in the Mustang Mach-E GT. It will have the same 88 kWh battery as the Extended Range RWD variant, along with a 480 hp twin-engine drivetrain that accelerates the car from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.7 seconds.
