SEVEN’S SUPERCARS SPECTATORS ON CHANNEL 10

By Dan McCarthy

Channel 7’s coverage of the Darwin Triple Crown far exceeded that of Network 10 in the Northern Territory last year.

Earlier this year, Channel 7 and its paid partner Fox Sports regained the only free-to-air television rights to the Supercars Championship.

Network Seven has rights to several live events, the rest is shown as a highlights package on Sunday or Monday evening.

After losing exclusive rights to Fox Sports and the 10 Network in late 2014, the network really got its motorsport coverage going.

In addition to supercars, the network also shows the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championship live on 7Mate and / or 7Plus.

The Darwin Triple Crown was only the second Supercars event the network had covered, and reached a total audience of 2.22 million people on its platforms during two days of coverage.

While Dick Johnson clinched pole position with Blue Oval drivers Will Davison and Anton de Pasquale, it was the Red Army that won the honor of the race.

Shane van Gisbergen won two of the three races, the other was won by Walkinshaw Andretti United driver Chaz Mostert.

Sevens 2.22 million viewers were a staggering 19% increase over the corresponding Supercars championship shown on Network 10 in Darwin last year.

Of the over two million viewers, 1.44 million came from the capitals scattered across the country, while the rest were outside the capitals.

The network was also pleased to announce that it has tripled its audience share on paid channel Fox Sports.

On Saturday, 75% of the country’s Supercars viewers tuned their TVs to Channel 7 as the network took up 74% of the audience share when Mostert took his second win with Walkinshaw Andretti United.

This continued on Sunday when 74% tuned in to watch van Gisbergen level Peter Brock in 48 career wins in the ATCC / Supercars championship

Apart from the free broadcast of main channel 7, a total of 1.61 million minutes of supercars action was streamed on 7Plus.

On Sunday, an average of 388,000 people watched Race 14 live and for free on Seven.

Seven’s live coverage returns from July 10-11 when the Supercars Championship takes place in the far north of Queensland.
