Tesla Model 3 is no longer eligible for electric car discounts in Canada – National

The Tesla Model 3 will no longer top the list of Canada’s most discounted electric cars.

In a notice posted on its website, Transport Canada announced that the popular car will no longer be eligible for the $ 5,000 electric car rebate program for the 2021 and 2022 models.

Only Tesla 3 models ordered before November 23rd are still eligible for the discount under the government’s iZEV program.

According to Transport Canada, Tesla has announced a price increase for its standard and standard models, which went into effect on November 23 and now exceed the approval requirements of the iZEV program.

“As a result, these vehicle models are no longer eligible for iZEV program incentives,” said the department.

The automaker’s website now lists the base price for the Model 3 at $ 59,990, well above the qualifying price of $ 45,000 to get the $ 5,000 discount. High-end versions of the same model can cost up to $ 55,000 and are still eligible.

In 2019, the company cut the base price of the Model 3 to just under $ 45,000 to be questioned for the program that began in May of that year.

Since then, nearly 35,000 Teslas have qualified for it, with the company receiving $ 173.6 million.

This makes Tesla the most popular electric car in Canada. The number two electric car, the Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid, which is eligible for a discount of US $ 2,500, has discounted 14,822 vehicles for a total of US $ 36.9 million since May 2019.

The Hyundai Kona is the second most popular all-electric vehicle and is also eligible for the full $ 5,000 discount. The company submitted 12,890 cars for the discount and received $ 64.4 million.

Joanna Kyriazis, a senior policy advisor at Clean Energy Canada, said the Tesla 3 has proven hugely popular but isn’t concerned that pricing from the iZEV program could negatively impact overall electric car sales.

“The federal discount program has been very popular and there are many other EV models that would qualify for the federal discount,” she said. “We just need a national mandate for zero-emission vehicles to ensure that Canadians across the country have enough of these vehicles.”

Earlier this year, the Federal Liberals said they intend to make half of all new cars sold in Canada emission-free by 2030 and 100 percent by 2035. About 3.5 percent of the new cars sold last year were ZEVs.

Tesla 3s skyrocketed to the top of the popularity list in Canada before the federal premium hit. Introduced in the spring of 2018, Tesla flew to the top of the sales list, selling nearly 5,000 cars in the first four months of the listing. The Nissan Leaf, which finished second in the second and third quarters of 2018, sold around 3,800 times.
