The $ 200,000 electric Porsche Taycan is Australia’s best-selling luxury car

A $ 200,000 all-electric Porsche is Australia’s best-selling luxury sedan just a month after its launch – and conveniently sells a $ 50,000 zero-emission Nissan.

In March, 161 Porsche Taycans found a home, and the German turbo sports sedan was finally offered for sale in Australia in 2021 – two years after production started in Stuttgart.

Despite a starting price of $ 190,000, the Taycan sold the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which achieved 155 sales despite prices starting at $ 97,000.

This made the Porsche sedan Australia’s best-selling luxury sedan with a price of over 70,000 US dollars.

The BMW 3 Series with 567 sales and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class with 364 sales were the only luxury sedans to outbid the much more expensive Taycan.

Auto expert Toby Hagon, the editor of EV Central, said the strong sales for the Taycan had more to do with Covid’s delivery bottlenecks, which frustrated paid-in drivers.

“There has been a lot of pent up demand for this car and its release in Australia has been delayed due to Covid,” he told Daily Mail Australia.

“I don’t think this is indicative of ongoing sales, but rather an 18 month preview and pre-order.”

Andrew Banks, the multimillionaire founder of the Morgan & Banks recruitment agency and represented on Ten’s Shark Tank, was among the long line of clients who joined the waiting list.

He received his white Taycan in February from a Porsche dealer in Alexandria in southern Sydney.

The dinner of the kick-off event consisted of Finder co-founder Fred Schebesta and PR queen Roxy Jacenko.

So far, 225 Taycans have been sold in 2021. Delivery starts in February.

In March, only 411 fully electric cars were sold, which corresponds to a market share of only 0.4 percent among the 100,005 vehicles that leave the showroom, according to data from the German Federal Chamber of the Automotive Industry.

Since Tesla was not included in the official auto industry figures, the Taycan accounted for 28 percent of all electric car sales.

The Taycan is already overshadowing the $ 200,000 gasoline Panamera, only one of which was sold in March.

It conveniently sold the 911, which had 28 sales.

The smaller Boxster had 17 sales while the Cayman had 18 sales.

The Taycan also found more buyers than the Cayenne SUV (37 sales) and the Cayenne Coupe (47 sales).

But the Macan sports SUV, with 265 sales, was the most popular Porsche.

In August, the Toyota RAV4 SUV made history as the first car available as a hybrid to top the sales charts.

Hybrid cars, however, still only have a small market share of 6.5 percent, with just 6,548 sold last month.

Toyota sold just five Priuses in March, compared with 14 last year.

The cheaper Prius V only achieved 15 out of 28 sales.

The smaller Prius C, a discontinued model for taxi fleets, achieved no sales compared to 13 in March 2020.
