Those who fail to comply with the law, which comes into effect in March, will face a fine of £ 42,000 per advert.

Proponents believe the move could help France meet its target of reducing emissions by 40 percent by 2030. However, critics have accused the officials of “stigmatizing” motorists and mocking the edict because it also applies to all-electric vehicles.

The UK has also set a goal of banning the sale of all new gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2030.
