Used car buying guide: BMW 3 Series (E46)

The sporty coupé version, called the 330Ci Club Sport, is in great demand. Manual versions can go from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.5 seconds and it looks good in Estoril Blue. Prices start at around £ 4000.

The sedan and T-model underwent a facelift in 2001 (with revised light glasses and bumpers), and the coupé and convertible the following year.

E46s are tough old things, but they suffer from being obsessed with people who can’t afford to run them. Cheap brake parts and tires as well as missed services are the order of the day. Many also drifted – even the diesels.

Since there is more space under the hood, the four-piston cars are easier to work with than six-cylinder, while the engines themselves are not canted, so they don’t have the same problems (see buyers watch out, right). Just remember if you are drooling over those 330 Ci …

“I love the E46 3 Series. I’ve owned an M3, Club Sport, and loads of 318is and 320is. They all drive just as well as anyone else – although some are of course much stronger. They are generally reliable, but neglect and abuse mean there are plenty of villains out there who are only suitable for the junkyard. On the other hand, it means that the best cars will increase in value. If you have a nice E46, take care of it. “
