A1 Leeds woman crashes fighting for her life after her car goes wrong

A woman lies in hospital with serious injuries after a car that drove upside down on the A1 (M) near Leeds yesterday crashed head-on into a van.

Police are requesting witnesses to the accident that occurred yesterday at around 3 p.m. on the A1 (M) northbound, which resulted in drivers being stuck for hours while the accident was cleared up.

The woman, in her mid-90s, was hit by the car as a passenger in the station wagon – and her injuries are said to be life-threatening due to her age.

West Yorkshire Police said a silver Volkswagen Polo, traveling north-south on the lane, hit the red Vauxhall Combo Van about a mile off the J44 near Aberford.

The drivers of both vehicles suffered minor injuries.

Police added that previous investigations suggest the Polo had headed the wrong way on the North Yorkshire A64 before heading in the wrong direction on the A1 (M).

West Yorkshire Police are asking anyone who has information or saw the Polo on the A64 to contact Road Police Unit 101 using Protocol 861 dated December 30th.

The accident blocked the lane heading north on the A1 (M) at around 3:00 p.m. yesterday, leaving drivers on this road and the nearby M1 standing still for hours after the roads were closed.

Drivers reported that an ambulance was present at the scene of the accident, as well as many ambulances that passed them on the hard shoulder to get to the scene of the accident.

The Yorkshire National Highways have gradually reversed the traffic jam – and the roads were cleared and reopened shortly after 9:30 p.m.
