Auto claims rise as restrictions wear off, says LV =

As COVID restrictions were eased and the British took to the streets again, car damage rose 30% in May compared to the beginning of the year, according to data from LV = General Insurance.

When the UK began reopening in mid-April, the number of accidents also rose, with a higher proportion occurring in parking lots and on highways than ever since March 2020, the insurer said.

On May 24th, LV = had the highest number of car accidents since November 2020. This was because drivers found it difficult to adjust to busier roads again. The number of accidents in parking lots in May was also at its highest level since the beginning of the pandemic. This was almost twice as much as January and higher than any month in 2019 except August.

“In the past few weeks we’ve seen terrible weather, more cars on the roads and people getting used to driving again, and these three factors have clearly resulted in more accidents,” said Martin Milliner, Claims Manager at LV = General Insurance.

“Some people are consistently getting behind the wheel for the first time in a while, so it’s really important that drivers take the time to get used to the busy roads and not rush to park or perform complex maneuvers. It is also worth overtaking your car if it has been on the road for a long time or has been driven, just to make sure that everything works as it should. “
