Car goes up in flames near Dawlish Elementary School

Firefighters were called near a Dawlish elementary school just before the children arrived for the day

A vehicle parked on the side of the road caught fire this morning (July 2nd) with 80 percent smoke and flame damage.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said a fire truck was dispatched from Dawlish to the incident shortly after 6 a.m.

The crew used a fighter jet with compressed air foam, thermal imaging camera and small tools to extinguish the flames.

According to a post from the Dawlish Fire Department, “A Dawlish fire engine has been mobilized to report a report of a burning car.

“Upon arrival, they confirmed the formation of smoke and flames and went to work with 2 respiratory protection sets, an attack jet with compressed air foam, a thermal imaging camera and small tools.

“The private vehicle on the public highway was quickly extinguished, but 80% of it was damaged by fire.”

Local police posted an update on their Facebook page this morning during the incident saying, “Due to a vehicle fire, the children will go straight to school.

“Please note that there is a one-way system in place to try to protect everyone, so please follow where we are sending you and do not stop in the street.
