Faber undergoes surgery after being hit by a car while training for the Elsy Jacobs Festival

The young professional cyclist Claire Faber was operated on for a long time in the hospital in Luxembourg on Friday and, according to team reports, is responsive again after she was hit by a car during a training drive and suffered several fractures.

The 22-year-old was on a training trip on Wednesday afternoon to prepare for the Elsy Jacobs Ceratizit Festival with her new team, Andy Schleck-CP NVST-Immo Losch. She suffered severe injuries to her jaw, collarbone and ribs, according to several news outlets.

“She has suffered serious injuries, but is conscious. We just have to hope for the best,” said sports director Tjarco Cuppens on Friday to a local newspaper, TagesBlatt.

Faber should have started on Friday afternoon in the prologue of the 2nd pro stage race for women, a home race for the native Luxembourger.

The team posted an announcement about the incident on their Facebook page, saying, “During her final preparations for her home race, Ceratizit Festival, Elsy Jacobs ignored a car and met Claire, who was relegating. We don’t currently know how long it will take her injuries to rehabilitate. All of our thoughts are with Claire and her family, and we hope that Claire makes a full recovery. “

Faber, a first year rider with Andy Schleck-CP NVST-Immo Losch, is Luxembourg’s reigning U23 national champion in both time trial and racing, titles she won in 2020. In 2016 she also won the junior street title and had already competed twice as a junior at the Elsy Jacobs Festival, but this would have been her first time as a professional. The event would have been her seventh start of the season.
