Fire ignites in the tandoori oven in the car that drove into the store on Marion Road

Firefighters put out a fire in a car after it crashed into an Adelaide shop in an Indian restaurant with a tandoori oven full of coal.

Important points:

  • The minivan crashed into a shop in southwest Adelaide on Sunday morning
  • In a tandoori oven inside, there was a fire in coals
  • The driver was not seriously injured

The Chrysler minivan pulled into the building on Marion Road and Cungena Avenue in Park Holme at around 9:30 a.m.

The Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) arrived at the scene and found smoke from a small fire rising from the rear of the vehicle.

“The crews found a tandoori oven in the back of the car … but it caused some problems for the driver during the impact,” said MFS commander Declan Dwyer.

A porch of the hit shop, Ashmans Accounting, was damaged along with the front wall.

The 34-year-old driver was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in an ambulance, but his father, Surinder Kumar, who arrived after hearing about the accident from police, said his son was not seriously injured.

Mr Kumar said the oven was used for a family barbecue on Saturday and will be returned to his Royal Tandoori restaurant in Parkside.

Raiden and Caitlin Schultz-Watts saw the car swerve before it hit the store.

“It was shaking and driving and I could see something was wrong,” said Caitlin.

“It was like ‘keep an eye on him’ and I could see him turn, stop and help out.”

They called Triple-0 and opened the doors of the car after seeing smoke inside.

Car crashes into three houses

In another accident early Saturday morning in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, a car crashed into several houses and a parked four-wheel drive.

Emergency services were called to Coventry Road in Smithfield Plains at around 1:30 a.m. after a car left the street and crashed into three houses.

The 49-year-old driver from Davoren Park was rushed to hospital with hand injuries.

The police believe that a medical episode may have led to the accident.

Senior Constable Rebecca Stokes said it was lucky the car didn’t crash through the walls of the houses.

“[There is] a lot of damage to the front of the houses and when the Toyota Camry crashed into the Nissan X-Trail that was parked in the driveway it pushed that into the front of the house as well, “she said.

“It looks like a small war zone.”
