Joe Biden celebrates 49 years since a car accident that killed his first wife and young daughter | US news

Joe Biden has visited the graves of his first wife and young daughter since he is 49 years old since they were killed in a car accident.

The US President visited St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware with First Lady Jill Biden and daughter Ashley on Saturday.

Biden’s then-wife Neilia and 13-month-old daughter Naomi died in the 1972 tragedy while on their way to choosing a Christmas tree not long after it was elected to the Senate.

His sons Hunter and Beau, who were then three and four years old, survived but suffered serious injuries.

Beau Biden died of a brain tumor in 2015 at the age of 46.

The car accident was a defining moment for the president and shaped his personal life and political career.

Mr. Biden later married Dr. Jill Biden, with whom he shares his daughter Ashley.

He attends church annually and this year has been accompanied by Hunter and other family members and friends.

The visit took place days before the president will give a speech on the proliferation of the variant of Omicron and the steps the White House is taking to help people in need.

Mr Biden is expected to issue a “strong warning of what winter will be like for Americans who choose to remain unvaccinated” on Tuesday amid a surge in the number of cases.

The government is “prepared for rising case numbers,” with Mr Biden willing to outline how his team will “respond to the challenge,” a White House official said.
