MONTREAL – Montreal police intercepted a suspected car theft ring Wednesday night after learning about suspected thefts in Lachine.
At 7 p.m., officers received an 911 call from witnesses who said they saw suspicious activity at a shipyard on Montreal-Toronto Boulevard near 1st Avenue.
Allegedly up to six cars were prepared for transport in a container.
Police say when they showed up, a suspect crashed into a police cruiser while trying to escape from the scene. The officer in the car was not injured.
Authorities note that the cars, mostly Hondas, could have landed in the port of Montreal if they had not shown up on time.
Hondas is among the top 10 most stolen vehicles per year, accounting for 310 of the thousands of vehicles reported stolen in Quebec in 2018. Many of these cars are resold abroad.
