Morrisons will expand its network of fast electric car charging stations as calls for an “urgent acceleration” are raised if the UK is to hit net zero.
Over the next 12 months, another 100 “next generation” locations are to be rolled out so that customers can recharge most cars from empty to full batteries in less than 45 minutes.
It is designed to enable customers to charge their car during a short shopping spree or a visit to a Morrisons café.
The supermarket, which recently installed its 200th GeniePoint fast charger, said it had already saved 2,000 tons of CO2.
The announcement follows comments from CMA boss Andrea Costelli this week, who said: “We urgently need to accelerate the introduction of charging points for electric vehicles in order to reach net zero.”
“We know customers don’t want to wait hours for their cars to charge. That’s why we decided to install the next generation of fast chargers, ”said Morrison’s Fuel and Services Manager Andrew Ball.
“It is important that we continue to offer our customers the convenience of charging their electric vehicles while they shop or eat with us. Regardless of whether they are going to the coast this summer or exploring the beautiful landscape, customers can rest assured that they are always close to one of our charging stations. “
