Police warn of reports of planned “car cruises”

Police patrols are reinforced after reports of a planned “car cruise”.

Greater Manchester police said the force was aware of a scheduled meeting in the Wigan area.

As a result, the police presence in the area has increased, GMP said.

And the police issued a warning that action would be taken against anyone who is driven in a dangerous manner.

Further details – or a time – were not disclosed.

However, police said they believe the event was scheduled for later on Saturday “around” the Westwood Way bypass – the A49.

The new connecting road A49 was opened last year.

The police have issued a warning

It runs from Warrington Road in Goose Green and along Westwood Way, past Scotman’s Flash to Westwood Park, just outside of Wigan town center.

In a post on social media on Saturday afternoon, GMP said, “We are aware that there is a potential ‘car cruise’ planned for today around Westwood Way (A49 bypass) in Wigan.

The police assume that the “cruise” is planned for the A49

So-called car cruise events typically attract high-performance vehicles and enthusiasts.

However, the police statement failed to address the legality of the event believed to have been planned for Wigan or what an event would actually involve.

A 19-year-old woman died and five others were injured in 2018 after a BMW collided with a group of pedestrians in what police called a “cruise meeting” on Europa Way near Trafford Park.
