A police officer is hailed as a hero for helping rescue a puppy that was trapped in a car on one of Georgia’s hottest June days. Officer Howell of the Duluth Police Department was stopped in the parking lot by a Walmart employee who noticed the puppy in dire straits.
“Officer Howell was able to see and hear the dog in distress through the extreme heat,” said a Facebook post from the Duluth Police Department on Wednesday. “Moments later, Officer Howell was able to unlock the door with a tool and save the puppy.”
Police Department Sgt Jill Manders then took the puppy that was “in obvious distress” and gave him water.
Later, after shopping, the puppy’s owner came out of Walmart and said she was only inside for a short time.
According to a timestamp from a Walmart employee, the owner was actually in the store for almost an hour.
“With the car turned off and there for almost an hour, the temperature inside was over 119 degrees,” the Facebook post said.
The puppy’s owner was charged by Gwinnett Animal Control. The owner’s identity has not been disclosed.
