Road worker, 39, killed after the car crashed into a ditch where he was repairing cables, the court hears

A road worker was killed after a car went off the road and drove into a ditch where he worked, a coroner heard.

Martin Andrew Parker of Tameside died earlier this month after an accident on Featherstall Road in Littleborough.

The 39-year-old from Denton suffered fatal injuries in the collision, Rochdale Coroners’ Court said on Wednesday (October 27).

During a brief opening of the investigation without public participation, details of the tragic collision were revealed on Sunday, October 17th.

Tracey Bunn, coroner for the Greater Manchester Police Department, told the court, “Martin was working with electrical cables in a ditch in the Featherstall Road pavement when a vehicle went through the barriers into the hole, killing him.

“The GMP investigations are still ongoing.”

Ms. Bunn added that Mr. Parker was identified to the officers by one of his colleagues.

A first cause of Mr. Parker’s death was identified by GMP as chest, abdominal and pelvic injuries.

Matthew Cox, assistant coroner for Greater Manchester North, adjourned the investigation pending the police accident report.

A date for the final hearing is still to be confirmed, but a review hearing will take place on February 14th next year.

Two of Mr. Parker’s colleagues at Electricity North West told the Manchester Evening News last week that he was “a friend in and out of work.”

“There’s not a bad word to say about him,” said Gareth Williams, who had known Mr. Parker for about 15 years.

“He was a devoted father and husband, an upright guy. He would do anything for everyone and nothing would ever get him down.

“He was just the salt of the earth.”

Jack Shaw, who worked with Martin for about four years, added, “He was sincere, kind, and the most selfless person.

“He was always positive, always happy. I can’t remember a time when he wasn’t in a good mood no matter what.

“He was just Martin.”

The Chapel House pub on Stockport Road, Denton is hosting two Halloween fundraising events for Mr. Parker’s family this weekend – one event has already sold out.
