Storm Arwen: First victim named as headmaster who died when a tree fell on a car

A primary school principal who died after a falling tree hit his car during Storm Arwen is pictured.

Francis Lagan, father of four, was known for several years as the director of St. Mary’s Primary School in Maghera, Co Londonderry, Northern Ireland and the local community, it is said.

Tributes have been received on Mr Lagan, believed to be in his forties, who was killed when Britain was struck by Storm Arwen.

He is said to have been traveling with his wife and children when a strong wind uprooted a tree that hit the vehicle.

“May his gentle soul rest in peace.”

There was also a Facebook message from the local sports club, Watty Graham, To Gleann, which read, “A great club man, coach, headmaster, colleague, mentor, friend, but most of all an amazing son, brother, husband and dad.

“We as a club and community will be strong with the Lagan family for the days, weeks and months to come.”

One person commented on Facebook: “Tragic, a lovely gentleman. Rest in peace.”

Another added: “God let his soul rest. So heartbreaking for his wife and children, relatives and friends.

The Fairhill Youth Center wrote on Facebook: “It is with great sadness that the Board of Directors and staff of the Youth Center learned of the sad and tragic death of the Director of Glenview Primary School, Mr. Francis Lagan RIP

“We extend our condolences to his wife, Louise, his children, his father, Brian, sisters, Roisin Anne Brenda, and our ex-work colleague Maura, and all the children at Glenview Primary School who faithfully attend our club. May his kind and gentle soul be. Rest in.” Peace .”

Many other honors have come to Mr. Lagan from friends and people who have worked with him.

The children’s book author Yvonne Fleming told loveBallymena.online: “I was devastated and heartbroken when I received the tragic news of Francis Lagan’s death.

“When he was the director of St. Mary’s Primary School Gortnaghey, he invited me three times to read my books.

“Just this week I visited him at his new school at St. Mary’s Primary School in Glenview and was received just as warmly. He was an amazing headmaster and it is a devastating loss to the school and the community.

“My deepest condolences go to his wife, children and family. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers at this very sad time. “

Motorists were warned “under no circumstances” to travel through parts of eastern Scotland and north-east England, while some train services were shut down due to strong winds, heavy rain and snowfall from Friday afternoon.

The Met Office issued the rare red warning for winds from 3:00 p.m. Friday to 2:00 a.m. Saturday when Storm Arwen arrived to hit the land with gusts of up to 90 miles per hour and waves of up to 10 meters .

At 10 p.m., the Met Office said the highest gust recorded during Arwen was 78 miles per hour in Inverbervie, south of Aberdeen.
