The car goes up in flames and closes part of the busy motorway while emergency services rush to the scene

A dramatic car fire led to the closure of a busy section of the motorway this evening.

Firefighters were called to the fire at the M53 / M56 Stoak motorway junction near the port of Ellesmere shortly before 5.30 p.m. today (Monday).

Highways England posted a picture of thick smoke rising from the blazing vehicle parked on the hard shoulder.

The M53 to the south at junction 11 was closed so that fire fighters could work on the vehicle and put out the fire.

All traffic has been diverted east onto the M56, only to turn around at J14.

At around 6 p.m. the fire was extinguished and the vehicle was recovered, whereupon the motorway was reopened.

There were no reports of injuries.
