PEOPLE regard electric cars as costly remorse for rich greens.
It was like that until recently. But not now.

Many of this year’s electric models are directly comparable to the gasoline cars that ordinary people buy.
For example, it doesn’t get much more normal than a small crossover.
The Peugeot 2008 is available as gasoline, diesel and electric.
So you can easily compare the costs.
Nobody buys a new car with cash. So let’s look at the PCP plans from the Peugeot website.
Let’s say a deposit of £ 3,000 and repayment over 36 months for each of them using the UK’s average annual mileage of 8,000.
All are in the Allure equipment from below, with no options.
The electric e-2008 Allure has the highest list price at £ 34,430, almost exactly ten grand more than the diesel.

But guess what? The government wants you to have an electric car and deposit £ 2,500 for that version.
Peugeot is also trying to increase electrical sales and is paying you a £ 2,600 deposit as a result.
Also, in three years’ time there will almost certainly be strong demand for used electric cars.
Therefore, depreciation is not predicted as quickly for the electric version as it is for the gasoline and diesel versions.
This also narrows the gap in monthly payments.
The net result is you pay £ 326 a month for the automatic petrol and £ 334 for the diesel. And £ 360 a month for the electric.

OK, so it’s a little more a month to put on your drive. But believe me, the electric 2008 will be cheaper to drive.
The gasoline costs almost £ 100 a month, not to mention all of the donuts you buy at the gas station.
While the electricity at home charged 15 P / kWh is less than 30 pounds. You have more than made up for the additional monthly PCP costs.
And that’s before we get to the other incentives.
Lower car tax, free entry into the London City Toll Zone, cheaper parking in many places and so on.
The electric has a battery range of about 180 miles. Then it takes almost an hour with a quick charger.

So if you regularly do long highway hauls, it’s not for you. You want gasoline or diesel.
But be realistic. How often do you cover more than 180 miles a day?
They charge overnight or while you are at work.
If you have a driveway there is a healthy allowance to install a charging socket.
However, if you live in an apartment and don’t have any public overnight accommodation anywhere near you, then you should approach an electric car with caution.
But if these two obstacles don’t apply to you, then suddenly the gasoline or diesel is the luxury. Not the electrics.
