Last week we saw Tata launch its first CNG models, a major government announcement on auto safety and a much-anticipated Dark Edition of a Tata SUV
To say that the past week has been action-packed would be an understatement. We’ve had up to five car launches (three of which were CNGs), Toyota’s unveiling of the India-spec Hilux, and some price hikes.
Here is the summary:
Phew… finally an all-black safari: Of all Tata’s premium SUVs, the Safari was the only model without a Dark Edition. But luckily, the automaker has finally unveiled the Safari Dark, and it’s available in four variants.
2022 Arrival of Tata Tiago and Tigor: The 2022 iterations of the Tiago and Tigor brought these two a revised feature list and some cosmetic tweaks, including two new colors. But the most important part of this update was the introduction of the duo’s factory fitted CNG kits.
BMW brings the revised X3 to India: BMW has launched the facelifted X3 in India. It is offered in two flavors and includes upgrades related to design and functionality. However, there is only one engine option for now.
The second-generation Maruti Celerio will get a CNG variant: During the launch of the second generation Celerio, Maruti confirmed a CNG version of the hatchback. Now it has kept its word and launched the Celerio CNG. However, the cleaner fuel is limited to the mid-spec trim.
India-spec Toyota Hilux unveiled: Toyota unveiled the Indian Hilux. The pickup – a platform sibling of the Fortuner – is offered in two versions and powered by the diesel heart of the SUV.
Skoda starts production of the Slavia: The Slavia will be Skoda’s new compact sedan, replacing the aging Rapid. The automaker has now started production of the new sedan at its Pune plant ahead of a potential launch in the coming months.
Another round of price hikes
We’ve seen price revisions from more automakers like Tata, MG, and Maruti (for both its Arena and NEXA cars). Between the three, the steepest hike is over a lakh on each model.
Important Vehicle Safety Announcement: In a welcome move, the government has issued a notice making six airbags mandatory for a given class of vehicle. It will come into effect around the last quarter of this year and cars in this category are expected to become more expensive.
