Traffic lights ‘out for a week’ at busy junction as car destroys control box

Traffic lights at Switch Island are not working after a vehicle ‘destroyed’ the control box this afternoon with full repairs not expected until next week.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue service warned drivers to expect significant delays and stated that the lights may be out of order for some time. According to traffic news service Inrix, most of the lights are out and will not be fixed until May 13 or May 14.

Traffic has been taken down to one lane and turning restrictions are in place to try and keep traffic flowing.

The latest update from Inrix states: “Stop-start traffic due to restrictions, traffic light failure and earlier accident on A59 at M57 / M58 / A5036 (Switch Island) Switch Island. The control box has been destroyed after a vehicle hit it, so most of the lights as Switch Island are out and won’t be fixed until Friday 13th or Saturday 14th. There are lane closures and turning restrictions to try and keep traffic flowing.”

Merseyside Fire and Rescue wrote on Twitter: “Safety Warning. We have been advised that all traffic control lights at switch island junction in Sefton are not currently working and may be out of action for some time- please be very careful in this area and expect significant delays.”
