Update on woman, 89, after man, 91, was hit by a car and killed

An 89-year-old woman is still fighting for her life after being hit by a car.

The 91-year-old man she was with died in the crash on Monday evening (October 18).

Police said they were called to Swan Lane, Wigan, just before 7 p.m. to report an accident.

Rescue workers rushed to the scene where a 91-year-old man and an 89-year-old woman were hit by a car.

The two were rushed to the hospital, but the 91-year-old man died early this morning (Thursday).

The 89-year-old woman suffered life-threatening injuries and the police described her condition as “critical”.

A 22-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and has since been released as part of the investigation.

These were some of the comments made on social media after the tragic news.

One said: “Such sad news that you will be 91 years old and have taken your life. Just for a nice walk.”

Another said: “This is another tragedy on the roads about another young driver who has lost another life and the man’s wife is fighting for her life. I hope this lady comes through but it becomes tragic when she learns that her husband has died. “

While another said, “I’m sorry for everyone involved.”

KennyRed said, “Absolute tragedy. Thoughts for the whole family.”

PauliHol said: “A terrible tragedy. If the lady gets through she will be absolutely devastated that the man she was with died of it.”

Another said, “Such sad news, thoughts are with the family.”

The detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident and are keen to speak to anyone who has information.

Police officer Karl Horner from the Serious Collision Division said: “This was a tragic incident in which an elderly man unfortunately lost his life. Our thoughts are very with his loved ones at this terrible time.

“To help us further investigate the incident, we are asking anyone with information or dash cam footage to call GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Department on 0161 856 4741 and report the incident 2687-18 / 10/2021.

“Alternatively, you can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
