The EQS isn’t exactly an electric S-Class, but it fulfills a similar role as a showcase for the latest Mercedes technology. With its tailor-made platform, it is a slimmer and more stylish affair than the company’s well-known ICE limousine, and it is more confident and agile to drive – and is just as comfortable and even quieter. The luxurious cabin is dominated by a huge 1.4 meter wide digital display, while beneath the skin is a large 107.8 kWh battery that offers an astonishing range of 485 miles on the 450+ and 420 miles on the more powerful 580 E-car in the world? It’s definitely up there.
EQV
Based on the V-Class, the EQV is a convincing argument for taxi companies and private car rental companies who want to transport up to six passengers in quiet and comfortable luxury. With a 201 horsepower motor, it offers decent power while its 90 kWh battery provides a useful 213 miles between charges. The lithium-ion cells sit under the floor so that the cabin and trunk are not impaired (it is huge inside), while the optional air suspension ensures a pleasant and almost noiseless ride. It is reasonably precise to drive, the dominant driving position and the good view make it easier to set up, while the charging capacity of 100 kW should ensure that you do not stand still for long.
MG
5 SW-EV
With an outdated exterior design, a relatively low rental price, and an overwhelming driving experience, the MG 5 won’t necessarily be high on your EV shopping list. But despite its weaknesses, the Chinese family station wagon is a good argument as a practical and cost-effective introduction to emission-free driving. There’s a handy 464 liter trunk and the 52.5 kWh battery provides enough power for 214 miles of driving. With 154 hp, the engine delivers a very brisk acceleration, while the soft suspension ensures good comfort and smoothness. And best of all, it only costs a little over £ 25,000.
ZS EV
Like the 5, the electrically powered ZS with the inexpensive business card comes to the fore. For just over £ 26,000, you can get a spacious, practical and well-equipped SUV that beats thousands of mainstream competitors like the Kia e-Niro. Yes, the interior is a bit cheap and cheerful, but it looks chic enough on the outside and its 141 horsepower engine delivers decent speed. However, it suffers from imprecise handling, is louder than most electric vehicles, and most importantly, its 44.5 kWh battery offers a below-average range of 163 miles. But if you’re just considering the lowest list price, the ZS might be worth a look.
